Golden Crane Digital Academy is a tuition-free, fully online Texas public school serving K-12 students, open to every student residing in Texas, including Cibolo/Converse.
As a fully online campus of Crane ISD, Golden Crane pairs certified Texas teachers and a state-aligned curriculum with a dedicated Educational Concierge for every family. Students in Guadalupe County and the surrounding northeast San Antonio corridor attend live classes from home, keep their local friendships and activities, and skip the commute entirely.
An Option Built for a Fast-Growing Corridor
The communities northeast of San Antonio have grown quickly, and the school experience has grown with them. Larger campuses, fuller classrooms, and heavier traffic across the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD and Judson ISD service areas change what a normal school day feels like. Proximity to Randolph Air Force Base also means a real population of families who relocate on military timelines and would rather not restart their child's education every few years.
A Guadalupe County virtual school addresses those pressures directly. Students typically engage in school activities between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with the schedule varying by grade level and adaptable to family needs within certain parameters. If your family moves, your child's school does not have to change.
This is a public school, not a correspondence course. Teachers are certified, the curriculum meets state standards, and the diploma is fully accredited.
What a School Day Looks Like
Live Classes With Certified Texas Teachers
Students attend live, interactive classes taught by Texas-certified teachers. Typical live sessions include 15 to 25 students, and small group instruction is limited to 4 to 8. Teachers are reachable through scheduled office hours, one-on-one appointments, email (typically answered within 24 hours), phone calls, and virtual conferences.
Independent Work With Real Flexibility
Live sessions happen at set times. Outside of those, students have flexibility in completing self-paced work, which makes the model workable for families juggling shift schedules, medical appointments, travel, or competitive training. A typical day includes a morning check-in, live classes, independent work time, breaks for physical activity and lunch, small group or one-on-one sessions as needed, and an afternoon wrap-up.
The Learning Coach Role
A Learning Coach is typically a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult who supports the student's daily learning activities in partnership with Golden Crane's teachers and staff. The daily commitment drops steadily as students mature:
- Grades K-5: roughly 4 to 6 hours daily
- Grades 6-8: roughly 2 to 4 hours daily
- Grades 9-12: roughly 1 to 3 hours daily
Learning Coaches receive orientation and training, regular communication with teachers, resources and guides, workshops and support sessions, and connection to a community of other Learning Coaches. You are not expected to teach the material.
The Middle School Years, Grades 6-8
Middle school is where many families start looking for alternatives. The academic jump is real, the social environment gets complicated, and students who were doing fine in elementary school sometimes stall out.
The middle school program for grades 6-8 is built to hold students steady through that transition, with regular advisory sessions addressing academic progress and social-emotional development, academic intervention when needed to ensure mastery of concepts, and advanced opportunities for accelerated learners. Eighth graders receive specific guidance on preparing for high school.
Students at this level also start managing their own work. Learning Coaches shift from hands-on support toward oversight, which is exactly the skill set high school will demand. Peer connection comes through interactive live classes, collaborative projects, virtual clubs, and regular social activities.
Elementary and High School Programs
Grades K-5
Most virtual schools in Texas start at grade 3 or grade 5. Golden Crane serves kindergarten through 12th grade. The elementary program builds literacy and numeracy foundations alongside hands-on materials shipped to your home, lessons designed for younger learners, movement breaks, and integrated art, music, and physical education. Only about 30 to 40 percent of learning time in grades K-2 happens online.
Grades 9-12
High school students work toward an accredited diploma recognized by colleges, universities, employers, and military branches. Available options include:
- Advanced Placement courses
- Dual credit through partnerships with Texas colleges and universities
- Career-Connected Learning with career exploration, skill development, and industry certification pathways
- Academic counselors for course selection and graduation planning
- College and career advisors for post-secondary preparation
Your Educational Concierge
Every family is paired with an Educational Concierge, a dedicated guide from enrollment through graduation who helps with:
- Onboarding, so you are not decoding a portal alone on a Sunday night
- Course planning aligned to your student's strengths, interests, and goals
- Building a daily schedule that works for your family while meeting academic requirements
- Ongoing check-ins that surface problems before they become failing grades
- Clubs, activities, and weekly engagement opportunities
- Make-up plans when illness or a family situation causes an extended absence
Tuition-Free and Publicly Funded
There is no tuition and no enrollment fee. Golden Crane Digital Academy operates as a public school campus, funded the same way any Texas public school is funded, with no cost to families for core educational services.
The practical expenses families ask about are also covered:
- Eligible students receive school-issued technology based on need
- All necessary learning materials are provided
- Hands-on materials for elementary students ship directly to your home
- Technical support is available during school hours by phone, email, and an online help portal
Support for Students Who Need More
As a Texas public school, Golden Crane is committed to serving all students:
- Special Education services delivered in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP)
- Full implementation of accommodations and modifications outlined in 504 plans
- Gifted and Talented services including advanced coursework, independent projects, and specialized instruction
- Accelerated pacing in subjects where a student excels
- A multi-tiered support system with regular progress monitoring and targeted intervention in specific skill areas
- Counseling services covering academic planning, college and career guidance, social-emotional support, and referrals to community resources
If your student has an IEP or 504 plan, mention it during enrollment so the special education team can put appropriate services in place before day one.
Five Reasons Families in the Area Enroll
- Schedule pressure. Competitive athletes, dancers, performers, and students with demanding training or rehearsal calendars can complete coursework around their commitments.
- Military relocation. Families who move on orders can keep the same school, the same teachers, and the same curriculum as long as they remain Texas residents.
- Health and medical needs. Students managing chronic conditions or frequent appointments can access recorded sessions and work with their Concierge on catch-up plans.
- Environment. Some students simply learn better in a calmer, lower-distraction setting with smaller live groups.
- Academic fit. Students who need acceleration in one subject and additional support in another get a program shaped around both.
Homeschooling families also transition in regularly. Previous academic work is assessed during enrollment to ensure proper placement.

Do online students still take STAAR?
Yes. As a Texas public school, students participate in all required state assessments. Testing happens in person at designated sites, families are notified well in advance, and locations are planned as close to home as possible.

A computer with a webcam and microphone, reliable high-speed internet, an updated browser such as Chrome or Firefox, and headphones with a microphone for live classes. Eligible students receive a school-issued device.
Can my child still play sports or stay in local activities?
