Free Virtual K-12 for Helotes/Northside Families

Families in Helotes who are searching for a West San Antonio online school now have a tuition-free public option serving students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Golden Crane Digital Academy is a fully online public school operated as a campus of Crane ISD, which means your child learns from Texas-certified teachers, follows a state-aligned curriculum, and earns a fully recognized diploma at no cost to your family.

For households along the western edge of Bexar County, our program delivers live instruction, dedicated family support, and advanced coursework to any student with a reliable internet connection.

A Tuition-Free Public Option for West Bexar County Families

The west side of the county has grown quickly. Neighborhoods along the Loop 1604 corridor, out toward Government Canyon, and through the Alamo Ranch and Leon Valley areas have filled in fast, and enrollment growth followed. Many families are happy with that. Others watch a capable student get lost in the scale of it.

Golden Crane Digital Academy serves as a Northside ISD alternative for families in this part of the county, and enrollment is open to any K-12 student residing anywhere in Texas. There are no entrance exams. We welcome students arriving from traditional public schools, private schools, charter schools, and homeschool environments.

A Large District, a Small Classroom

This corner of the state is served by one of the largest school districts in Texas. Large districts bring real advantages in facilities, athletics, and program variety. What they cannot always guarantee is that a quiet student gets noticed, or that a struggling one gets caught early. We built our program on the opposite premise, and the numbers reflect it:

  • Live class sessions typically include 15 to 25 students
  • Small group instruction sessions are limited to four to eight students
  • Every family is assigned a dedicated Educational Concierge who stays with them through graduation
  • Teachers are reachable through live sessions, scheduled office hours, one-on-one appointments, phone calls, and email typically answered within 24 hours

Our mission is built around the belief that every student is capable of greatness and that our job is to remove the barriers standing in the way. You can read more about the values behind that on our About Us page.

What Learning Looks Like by Grade Level

We operate three separate grade-band campuses so that structure and expectations match where a student actually is.

Elementary School (K-5)

Young learners need balance between screen time and hands-on work. Kindergarten through second grade spends roughly 30 to 40 percent of learning time online, about two to three hours daily. Third through fifth grade runs closer to 50 to 60 percent. The rest goes to offline projects, physical materials, movement breaks, and independent reading.

Serving kindergarten through second grade is a meaningful difference, since many virtual programs do not begin until third or fifth grade. Learning Coaches, usually a parent or guardian, spend about four to six hours daily with a K-5 student, tapering as independence grows.

Middle School (6-8)

The middle grades are where virtual enrollment often makes the biggest difference, and they get particular attention in our program. These are the years when students either build genuine academic independence or quietly fall behind while a large campus moves on without them.

Students in grades 6 through 8 spend roughly four to five hours online each day, with Learning Coaches providing two to four hours of daily oversight. That involvement decreases as students take more ownership of their own schedules. The program includes:

  • Cross-curricular projects that connect subjects rather than isolating them
  • Structured career exploration that begins well before high school
  • Regular advisory sessions covering academic progress and social-emotional development
  • Academic intervention when a student needs it, to ensure real mastery rather than passing along gaps
  • Advanced opportunities for students ready to accelerate
  • Focused transition guidance for eighth graders preparing for high school coursework

Full details on curriculum, daily structure, and expectations are on our Middle School 6-8 page.

High School (9-12)

High school students take primary responsibility for managing their schedules and assignments while Learning Coaches move into an oversight role. Daily online time runs about five to six hours depending on course load.

The 9-12 curriculum includes core courses aligned to Texas standards, honors and advanced options, and diverse electives. Students can pursue Advanced Placement coursework, earn college credit through dual credit partnerships, and work toward industry certifications. Flexible scheduling accommodates extracurricular commitments, part-time jobs, and family responsibilities.

Support for Every Student

As a Texas public school, we are required to serve all students, and we treat that as a starting point rather than an exception.

Students with an Individualized Education Program receive a full range of special education services in accordance with that IEP, and accommodations outlined in 504 plans are fully implemented. Tell us during enrollment so the special education team has services ready before the first day.

Students who need help move through a multi-tiered support system with regular progress monitoring and targeted intervention. Counseling covers academic planning, college and career guidance, social-emotional support, and referrals to community resources.

Funding and Cost

Golden Crane Digital Academy is 100 percent tuition-free for Texas residents in grades K-12. As a public school campus funded through the state's public education system, we charge no tuition, no enrollment fee, and no hidden costs for core educational services. Included at no additional charge:

  • Digital textbooks and online learning platforms
  • Certain physical materials for hands-on activities
  • Required reading materials and course-specific resources
  • School-issued devices for students determined eligible during enrollment

Students need a computer with a webcam and microphone, reliable high-speed internet, an updated browser, and ideally a headset for live classes.

Request Information or a Virtual Open House

Enrollment for the current school year is open, and spaces are limited by design to protect class sizes. The most useful next step is a conversation where you can ask direct questions about curriculum, daily schedule, and support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this really free for families in this area?

Yes. As a public school campus, there is no tuition or enrollment cost for any K-12 student residing in Texas, and core learning materials are provided at no charge.

Will my child still have a social life?

Many of our students stay active in community-based leagues, club sports, church groups, and neighborhood friendships, and the schedule flexibility often frees up more time for them. Within the school, students connect through live classes, collaborative projects, virtual clubs, student forums, virtual field trips, and regional in-person meetups when possible.

Do online students take state tests?

Yes. State-required testing applies to all Texas public school students, including those enrolled online. Our team coordinates the logistics so families know when and where to report.

Can we enroll mid-year or transfer from another school?

Yes. We recommend starting at the beginning of a semester when possible, but we accept enrollments throughout the year based on availability. Your Concierge manages the transition, including academic records and course placement.

Will colleges take the diploma seriously?

Yes. We are fully accredited, our curriculum meets or exceeds Texas state standards, and our diplomas are recognized by colleges, universities, employers, and military branches.
