Golden Crane Digital Academy is a fully online public school operated as a campus of Crane ISD, which means your child learns from Texas-certified teachers, follows a state-aligned curriculum, and earns a recognized diploma at no cost to your family. For households across Northeast Bexar County and the neighboring Guadalupe and Comal County communities, this is a genuine alternative to the traditional classroom without giving up the structure and accountability of a public school.
Whether your student needs a calmer learning environment, a schedule that flexes around athletics or travel, or simply a better academic fit, our program was built for families who want more from their child's education.
A Tuition-Free Public School Option for Northeast Bexar County Families
The communities along the I-35 corridor northeast of San Antonio have grown quickly, and local schools have grown with them. Some students thrive in that setting. Others find that larger campuses and rigid bell schedules do not match how they learn best.
Golden Crane Digital Academy serves as a Schertz-Cibolo ISD alternative for families in this part of the state, along with those in Cibolo, Converse, Universal City, and the surrounding area. Because we enroll students statewide, military families connected to Joint Base San Antonio can also maintain educational continuity as long as they remain Texas residents.
Any K-12 student residing in Texas is eligible to enroll. There are no entrance exams, and we welcome students transitioning from traditional public schools, private schools, charter schools, and homeschool environments.

How Learning Works at Each Grade Level
We operate three distinct grade-band campuses so that instruction, pacing, and expectations match a student's developmental stage.
Elementary School (K-5)
Our K-5 program intentionally balances screen time with hands-on work. Students in kindergarten through second grade spend roughly 30 to 40 percent of their learning time online, or about two to three hours daily. Third through fifth graders spend closer to 50 to 60 percent, or three to four hours. The remainder is filled with offline projects, physical materials, movement breaks, and independent reading.
Serving kindergarten through second grade is a meaningful difference, since many virtual programs do not begin until third or fifth grade. Learning Coaches, usually a parent or guardian, typically spend four to six hours daily supporting a K-5 student, and that involvement decreases as independence grows.
Middle School (6-8)
The middle grades focus on building independence while support remains close at hand. Students spend approximately four to five hours online each day, participate in cross-curricular projects, and begin structured career exploration. Learning Coaches for this age group typically provide two to four hours of daily oversight.
Regular advisory sessions address academic progress and social-emotional development, and eighth graders receive targeted guidance on the transition to high school coursework.
High School (9-12)
High school students take primary responsibility for managing their own schedules and assignments while Learning Coaches shift into an oversight role. Daily online time runs about five to six hours, depending on course load.
The 9-12 curriculum includes core courses aligned to Texas standards, honors and advanced options, and a range of electives. Students can pursue Advanced Placement coursework, earn college credit through dual credit partnerships with Texas colleges and universities, and build toward industry certifications. Flexible scheduling accommodates extracurricular commitments, part-time jobs, and competitive training schedules.

Your Family's Educational Concierge
From the day you enroll, you are paired with a dedicated Educational Concierge who stays with your family through graduation. No comparable service exists among other Texas virtual schools. Your Concierge:
- Walks you through onboarding step by step so the transition is not overwhelming
- Helps design an academic path aligned with your child's strengths, interests, and goals
- Provides ongoing check-ins, resources, and encouragement to keep students on track
- Adapts recommendations to your family's specific circumstances and daily rhythm
- Connects students with clubs, activities, and weekly engagement opportunities
For a parent new to virtual learning, that single point of contact removes most of the guesswork.
Support for Every Learner
As a Texas public school, we are required to serve all students, and we take that responsibility seriously.
Students with an Individualized Education Program receive a full range of special education services in accordance with that IEP. Accommodations and modifications outlined in 504 plans are fully implemented. Families should notify us during enrollment so the special education team can have appropriate services in place before the first day of class.
Students who need additional academic help move through a multi-tiered support system that includes regular progress monitoring to catch challenges early and targeted intervention in specific skill areas. On the other end of the spectrum, gifted and talented students access accelerated pacing, advanced coursework, independent projects, and enrichment opportunities.
Counseling services cover academic planning, college and career guidance, social-emotional support, and referrals to community resources when appropriate.
Teachers stay reachable through live sessions, scheduled office hours, one-on-one appointments, phone calls, and email typically answered within 24 hours. Live classes generally include 15 to 25 students, while small group instruction is limited to four to eight.
Funding and Cost Information
Golden Crane Digital Academy is 100 percent tuition-free for Texas residents in grades K-12. Because we are a public school campus funded through the state's public education system, families pay no tuition, no enrollment fee, and no hidden costs for core educational services.
What is included at no additional charge:
- Digital textbooks and online learning platforms
- Certain physical materials for hands-on activities
- Required reading materials and course-specific supplies
- School-issued devices for students determined eligible during enrollment
Students do need a reliable high-speed internet connection, an updated browser, and ideally a headset with a microphone for live classes. Eligible students receive a school-issued computer with webcam and microphone, because technology should never be the reason a child cannot access a quality education.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this really a free online school for families in this area?
Yes. As a public school campus, there is no tuition or enrollment cost for any K-12 student residing in Texas. Core educational services and learning materials are provided at no charge.
Can my child still participate in local sports and activities?
Many of our students participate in community-based leagues, club sports, church groups, and social organizations near home, and the schedule flexibility often leaves more time for those commitments. We also offer virtual clubs, collaborative projects, online student forums, virtual field trips, and regional in-person meetups when possible.
Do virtual students take state tests?
Yes. State-required testing applies to all Texas public school students, including those enrolled online. Our team coordinates testing logistics with families so students know when and where to report.
Can we enroll mid-year or transfer from another school?
Yes. We recommend starting at the beginning of a semester when possible, but we accept enrollments throughout the year based on availability. Your Educational Concierge manages the transition, including academic records and placement.
How much parent involvement does this require?
It depends on grade level. Learning Coaches for K-5 students typically spend four to six hours daily, middle school families two to four hours, and high school families move into an oversight role. Your Concierge helps build a daily schedule that works for your household.
What if my family relocates?
As long as your family remains a Texas resident, your student continues with the same teachers, courses, and Concierge without re-enrolling or losing academic momentum. This continuity is one reason military-connected families consider virtual enrollment.
